The Post Office was destroyed on May 2, 1992, after Bosnian Serb forces placed dynamite within the building and then hurled incendiary shells at it until it burned down. In addition to destroying mail bound for areas outside of Sarajevo, the attack also destroyed the switches for the city's 150,000 phone lines, leaving the majority of the city without any telephone service.
Today, the ground floor has been restored, while the rest of the building still sits empty. In addition to providing postal services, the building hosted an art exhibit in 1996.
