A number of cemeteries in Sarajevo fell under Bosnian Serb occupation during the siege, leaving few formal places to bury the dead. The old Lav cemetery on Kosevo Road expanded onto the soccer field south of Zetra sports hall (right) in order to accommodate the city's rising death toll. A quick survey of the tombstones will reveal that the majority bear the years 1992 and 1993, the first two years of the siege that saw the most fatalities.

The Olympic tower stands as a silent reminder to the promise that the city once had.
