The cityscape is dotted with 'Sarajevo roses', impact craters left by the many artillery and mortal shells that rained down upon the city during the siege. There are very few buildings in Sarajevo that do not bear these scars. Some of these impact craters have been symbolically filled in with red rubber, signifying the loss of life from those attacks.
