
During the siege, many of the city's parks served as both makeshift cemeteries and sources of firewood. With no gas or oil for heating, Sarajevans denuded the city and surrounding mountainsides of trees in order to heat their homes during the brutal winters. With firewood running at 350 DM per cubic meter ($190 US), even the stumps of cut-down trees and park benches were used.
Central park, just two tram stops east of the Holiday Inn, is Sarajevo's most well-preserved park.
