What do you get when you have a director, Robert Rodriguez, scrape $7000 together from his summer job, hire a bunch of unknown Mexican actors, and make a film directed at the Spanish video rental market. El Mariachi is a lot better than it sounds and has a lot more to offer than your typical Hollywood mega-buck action films. A mariachi singer strolls into town and is mistaken for an escaped prisoner who is out for revenge against a local crime boss. Though there are many aspects about this movie that scream cheap, such as the bargain basement pyrotechnics, and the grainy look of the film, it is an entertaining action film that does have its moments. And definitely better than the big-budget follow-up "Desperado", which had no heart.
